(The Richmond skyline at night found here.)
My name is Christina Hughes; I am 23 and am a fifth year senior here at OU. I am both happy and sad that I will be graduating in May. I was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. I am majoring in Public Relations and Letters, but I want to go to graduate school for Urban Planning. I have a strong fascination with cities, especially those with a minimal negative impact on the environment. I would love to study major cities in countries like Germany, Norway and Sweden to see how they implement green initiatives. I would then bring some of those ideas back to the United States and try to incorporate them into cities here.
(Three Norwegian Forest Cats in the snow found here.)
Other than cities, I really like cats. I mean I really really like cats. I have two cats, Lucky, at the young age of 12 and Link, who is almost a year old. Lucky is my heart. I do not know what I would do without him. (Just don't tell Link that Lucky is a little bit more my favorite.) Along with having them, I also follow pretty much any Instagram account that features cute kitties. Even though I advocate for adopting cats from shelters, I would really love to own a pure bred Norwegian Forest Cat and a Ragdoll one day. Maybe I can convince my boyfriend to buy me one. :P Speaking of my boyfriend, his name is Taylor. He does IT/Tech-y things and is unbelievably intelligent. I suppose I will keep him.
For now I shall list some fun facts about me below.
My favorite movie is Drive.
I'm really scared of Toucans and Octopi. I can't even be in the same room as a Toucan.
I prefer hurricanes to tornadoes.
I'm notorious for crying during almost any animated movie or movies where an animal is the main character.
I adore Bernie Sanders. I will definitely be voting for him.
The Giver quartet is, in my opinion, the best book quartet ever. However, Harry Potter is my favorite book series (of course).
I love The Office, Once Upon A Time and One Tree Hill.
Well, it was nice talking to you guys and I hope you enjoy my blog!
It is fun meeting you again, Christina... I remember things better a second time! And now I can connect with Richmond: I will be going there in May to do a workshop at a conference. I don't go to a lot of conferences, but this one looks like a lot of fun (i.e. not just lectures), so I am really excited: VCU AltFest. I'm hoping I can go up a day early to do some tourism since I have never been to Richmond. Any recommendations...? Also, seeing your Norwegian Forest Cats made me realize that this funny meme is probably one of those cats: Im in ur Narnia. Anyway, welcome back, and I am so excited to see what you will do with the epic stories! And: GO, BERNIE!
ReplyDeleteSo exciting that you're visiting Richmond! You should check out Maymont Park while you're there. It's a combination of gardens, zoo exhibits and history in the heart of Richmond. The best part: it's free! I see that you'll get to experience some of the food trucks... you won't regret it. There are tons of amazing restaurants too! Some of my favorites are Burger Bach, Mama J's Kitchen, and The Hill Cafe. I hope you have loads of fun while you're there. :)
DeleteNice to meet you Christina! First off, I really like how you set up your blog.It looks like one I might have stumbled upon on tumblr. Are you aware of the internet cat video festival in OKC? If not, there is a Facebook event page for more info. Also, have you ever been in the same room as a toucan?
ReplyDeleteHi, Christina!
ReplyDeleteI was actually in Myth and Folklore with you last semester, and I am excited to get to look at your work again!
I think I probably commented on your cat picture last time, but I love how big and fluffy they are!! I got a kitty this past summer, and he is getting so big! I think it’s really hilarious that you mentioned one of your cats is a little more your favorite. I feel the same way about my pups (you can’t tell them that, either).
I hope this semester goes swimmingly for you!
Christina, what brought you to OU all the way from Richmond? Your career plan to study environmentally friendly cities in other countries sounds like a great way to travel and learn effective ways to make America greener. I like your cats’ names and hope that one day you will own those cats that you desire. I look forward to interacting with you throughout this class.
ReplyDeleteHey Christina! It is so great to meet you! As a fellow graduate in May I completely agree that this last semester of college is bittersweet. That is so cool that you are from Richmond! Although I have never visited Richmond, I have heard wonderful things such as the culture and beautiful views from both the city and suburbs. I think that your desired professional career path is awesome! I find macro efficiencies so interesting to think about and personally analyze. Europe definitely has some wonderful urban systems put into place and being able to live there for a bit would be so fun and rewarding. I wish you the best for your future career, I’m sure it will be bright!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you again and best of luck this semester!
Christina,
ReplyDeleteYou probably have the best blog in this class, at least from what I've seen. Very professional.
Drive, huh? I have to say, that was one of those movies that flew under my radar. I just added it to my list of movies to watch though, so here's a premature thank you for recommending it to me!
Also, what is so frigthening about toucans? Is it their festive bill? How do you feel about fruit loops? So many questions . . .
Your aspirations are very interesting to me. Urban planning, huh? Have you been to many cities? OKC is very grid-like, not very organic, so I guess that would be seen as good from a planning perspective. My favorite city is Denver! I love the atmosphere of the city, the peple, the food, the scenery! What's yours?
Hello again!
ReplyDeleteI think it is funny, I just mentioned on your favorite places blogpost that you should check out Uvita, Costa Rica. BUT That is the only place in Costa Rica that I actually saw a Toucan! I personally thought it was cool, but it was far away! Anyway, you should still visit.
I have actually never read or seen all of the harry potter movies but what I have experienced about them is pretty cool. We just had a Dance that was themed Harry Potter!
Hey Christina, it's nice to virtually meet you! Haha.
ReplyDeleteI just want to say that I absolutely love your blog template and set up. It's so easy to use and is very aesthetically appealing. Just like you, I absolutely adore cats. I was never allowed to have pets growing up, but my roommate this year has a cat so it's basically like I finally have my own pet!
I just wanted to say hello again! I don't know if you updated your introduction or what, but I just wanted to say that I LOVE THE OFFICE. It is my absolute favorite show! The YouTube clip you posted was absolutely perfect. Also, it's so crazy but as I'm writing this, I'm rewatching One Tree Hill!
DeleteHi Christina, it is great to hear about you everything you are passionate about. Your plan for cities is very interesting and we need more people like you to incorporate green initiatives. I like how you would go to other cities and take ideas back and use them here in the United States. I also like cats as well and my girlfriend mom has nine cats at home so they are always around when I am there. I am sure you will be watching the Iowa caucus tonight.

ReplyDeleteChristina, your interest in cities and urban planning is fascinating! I’m sure you have heard of the Maps Project in Oklahoma City that has really transformed a lot and revived the city. I think incorporating green initiatives into cities is so important, especially to stay up with modern technologies. You may be sad about graduating, but I am glad that there are people like you who are going out in the world to make big changes! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteHi Christina, it's great to meet you. You sound like you have a great plan in place, and I bet you're excited to graduate. My mom is a huge cat person too, and she loves her two Russian Blue cats. You made me laugh pretty hard at your fear for toucans! How does one even develop a fear for toucans?! I guess I cant judge though, since I am afraid of ostriches. It was nice to meet you and I look forward to hearing more about you throughout the semester.
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm so glad to come across someone who also will be voting for B. Sanders. It makes me feel not so alone in my red state (even though you’re not here). I’m super jealous that you have so many cats, I have always loved them and wish I had the time/energy to properly take care of one (or any animal really). I had various animals growing up bunnies, pigs, chickens, cats, dogs and etc., but cats were always my go to animals. Maybe when my life is a little less hectic I can adopt a lazy, old one and be completely happy.
ReplyDeleteHey Christina, I noticed that you mentioned your preference for hurricanes over tornadoes. I'm actually more used to tropical weather myself so I've had my fair share of hurricane alerts. Also, thanks for the compliments about my storytelling post last week. I'm glad that you were able to enjoy it. I look forward to reading some of your stories as well.
ReplyDeleteChristina,
ReplyDeleteIt is really great to meet you! I am also a cat person. As a kid I had a full bred Persian. He was dumber than a box of rocks but he was freaking hysterical. I loved him to death. After reading your page you probably don't want to read A Light Snack :-P It has a talking cat in it! Well a telekinetic cat anyway.
Love Bernie, Once, and I can't believe you know about the movie Drive. So few people do and I thought it was a fantastic film and an amazing performance by Ryan Gosling.
So how long did you play sim city?
Wait.... there are FOUR Giver books?! I remember reading the first one in elementary school and loving it. All this time there have been three more? Well, I know what I'll be doing this summer! Thanks for tuning me in :). I am a fan of cats as well. My family had cats my entire childhood and they still have multiple to this day. We have always had Siamese and Oriental Shorthairs. If you have never seen an oriental shorthair, check them out in google images. Most people think that they are strange, but I think that they are beautiful and they have such strong personalities. It was great getting to know a bit about you. I'm going to pop over to one of your storytelling posts.
ReplyDeleteHello Christina!
ReplyDeleteWe meet again! We had class together last semester in Mythology and Folklore! I love your blog page. It is unique and fun. I love cats too. I am actually allergic to them, but I have two and I am addicted to their cuteness. We have our cat Freyden the Furpants kitty for 10 years and our youngest addition, Little Tiny Dancer for two years. The cats are the best comedy in our house. They rule the whole place. We are human slaves to their feline whims. I have never been to Richmond Virginia. I have not had the opportunity to visit the east coast of our country yet. I do plan to do so within the next few years. The photo you shared is gorgeous. Congrats on graduation this year! Best of luck to you in all you do in the future pursuits of life.
Hello Christina,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your upcoming graduation. Your major and future travel plans sound very exciting. I am a fan of cats as well. I have had a chance to do some work at a couple of shelters around the city. I've never been to Richmond. I'm sure the weather is totally different from Oklahoma. Hopefully, you won't experience any tornados this spring. It was great to meet you. I look forward to reading some of your work this semester.
Hey Christina!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of Urban Planning before, but it sounds very intriguing! I would be very interested to see what types of green initiatives you come across in Europe and to see how you would try to implement them here! I also LOVE Harry Potter and Once Upon a Time! Once Upon a Time has had its ups and downs over the seasons, however, I am really enjoying it right now! Congratulations on your upcoming graduation and good luck with all of your future endeavors!

ReplyDeleteHello Christina,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your introduction. It is nice that you are graduating after this semester spring 2016. Congratulations on that. It is nice that you want to go to a graduate school for Urban planning, so good luck with that. It was nice to meet you. Thanks for sharing. I am looking forward to read some of your blogs.

Hi Christina! I love that you want to do urban planning with minimal environmental impact. I once thought about doing something along those lines as well. Sustainability is very important to keep our environment healthy for the future. Your fun facts are great are silly! Office is also one of my favorite shows! That video is a pretty good synopsis of how funny it is!
ReplyDeleteHi Christina, it is pleasant meeting you. I wish I came across your blog earlier in the semester rather than later. You seem like an awesome person! Once Upon A Time is one of my favorite shows also. This new season is crazy with Emma and Hook. And Gold, wow… Sometimes I wish Regina would go back to being the Evil Queen, but it’s nice to see a different side of her at times. Congratulations on graduating this semester. I wish your well in your future endeavors.
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you, Christina!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on almost-graduating! I am also at the point where I'm both very excited and very terrified. Real life, am I right?
I'm also obsessed with cats. My cat is almost 10, but she's constantly mistaken for a kitten because she's so small. Those forest cats look totally badass, but I bet they'd give the most amazing cuddles.
I think it's so funny that you're scared of octopuses! Toucans I get, because birds can be a little sketchy. But octopuses are so smart! They're actually my favorite animal, haha. There's a really funny but informative video called "True Facts About the Octopus." It might help you see why I appreciate them so much! (Or it might freak you out and make you fear them more... a bit of a risk, really.)
Hello again Christina! This week’s assignment had us commenting on people’s blog we feel like we know (which I’m sure you already know, haha). So, of course I had to come to your blog. I mean why not? I already spammed pretty much your entire page and it makes me seem way stalkerish...It’s not my fault I promise! I haven’t see the video you have posted here yet and I have to say I could not stop laughing. I haven’t seen The Office in a really long time. I forgot how great it was, so thank you reminding me of it :). It was nice getting to know you throughout this class and I hope you have a great rest of the semester!
